Agri-land lease law can check suicides: Haque

Published on:

At a time when farmer suicide cases on the rise in the State, NITI Aayog Expert Committee Chairperson T Haque on Wednesday observed here that the agricultural land leasing law, which identifies tenant farmers and protect them from crop losses, would be able to check farmer suicides across the country.

Haque, who is the NITI committee to prepare a Model Agricultural land leasing act in consultation with seven States, said the law, which is currently being implemented in Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, allows farmers to take loans from banks.

“This (law) also enables small farmers to get loan eligibility cards to lessen input costs during cultivation. Besides they can also insure their crops. Hence, they need not be worried in case of crop failure,” opined Haque at a State-level consultation programme held here.
