The aggrieved students of the Ramadevi Women’s University, who were confined in a room by the police at the university premises on Thursday during Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s visit there, moved the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) on Saturday seeking justice to them.
Stating that their human rights were violated, the girl students, flanked by some Chhatra Congress leaders, met the OHRC and submitted a memorandum highlighting the injustice meted out to them by the police and the university administration in the presence of the Chief Minister.
The students urged the commission to intervene in the sensitive matter and direct the State Government to explain the rationale behind their illegal confinement during the CM’s visit to inaugurate the State’s first women’s university.
Meanwhile, sources said the commission directed the Commissioner of Police to submit a report in this regard.
Besides, BJP Mahila Morcha also met State Commission for Women (SCW) Chairperson lopamudra Buxipatra in the day seeking justice for the ‘mentally-tortured’ girl students.
Protesting against the “human bomb” statement by the ruling BJD MlA Priyadarshi Mishra of Bhubaneswar, Chhatra Congress activists gheraoed his official quarters. A scuffle erupted between the protestors and the police as the former tried to enter the quarters forcibly.
Meanwhile, the victim girl students also lodged an FIR against the university OSD and the PG Council Chairman at the Saheed Nagar police station. “We lodged the FIR seeking action against the OSD and the PG Council Chairman, who are directly responsible for the detention,” said Truptimayee Behera, who was one of the confined girls.
