Accused Jagatsinghpur doctor still at large

Though a week passed since two infants allegedly kept for a clandestine sale were rescued from a nursing home here, police have failed to nab the nursing home owner Dr Paramananda Achary who is at large.

Acharya was called to appear in the Jagatsinghpur police station on Wednesday for recording his statement under Section 162 CrPc, but he skipped.

According to police, soon after the incident and basing on the complaint lodged by Child Welfare Committee [CWC] chairperson, a case against the doctor has been registered.

A police investigation team had visited the nursing home, residence and village of the doctor but he was found unavailable and his kin could not answer about his whereabouts.

“We had issued a notice and displayed at the nursing home asking the alleged doctor to appear at police station on Wednesday but since he did not turn up, the next legal course would be taken,” said Jagatsinghpur police station IIC Rajanikanta Misra.

The rescued infants have been shifted to local Sisu Ashrama, a child care home here, and the District Child Care Protection Unit published a newspaper advertisement seeking claim on the infants.

Meanwhile, one woman Mamina Bhoi from Balia Gopinathpur village in the Biridi area approached the CWC claiming motherhood of an infant, but she could not furnish any proof. The claim is being probed, informed Child Protection Officer Udaya Swain.

Again, the nursing home was sealed and the fugitive doctor was asked to appear before the district health department authority, said Additional District Medical Officer of Jagatsinghpur Headquarters Hospital Dr Maheswar Pradhan.
