The Dhenkanal Town police have arrested Ranjan Sahu, the accused in the rape of a minor girl, who committed suicide at Bhagabanpur village in the district on Sunday fearing humiliation.
Acting on a tipoff, the police raided the residence of accused Ranjan Sahu’s relative at Dandadhar under Kankadahada block in the district and arrested him late on Monday night.
Meanwhile, BJP activists led by former MlA Krushna Chandra Patra, along with the kin of the deceased blocked the road near the College Square demanding Rs 10 lakh compensation to the victim’s family. On Monday Congress activists too had staged a road blockade demanding arrest of the accused and adequate compensation to the kin of the victim’s family.
On Sunday, the victim, a Class-IX student, doused herself with kerosene before setting herself on fire. The minor was raped by her neighbour Ranjan Sahu while she had gone out of her house to attend nature’s call in the wee hours. Following this, an FIR was lodged at the Town police station.
