In a major breakthrough in the case of the brutal killing at Balianta area on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar on Friday, the accused spotted on the CCTV was identified hours after the footage was aired on news channels.
As per the preliminary investigation, the suspect captured on the CCTV was identified as Mamun Routray, the younger brother of the deceased Pritam Routray, informed Balianta police station IIC Pradeep Rout.
Though the reason behind the murder was yet to be ascertained, a property dispute or family feud could be the possible reason for which Mamun brutally killed his younger brother, Rout said.
Police have formed two teams to nab the accused.
Both Pritam and Mamun are said to be residents of Sabar Sahi in the Laxmisagar area of Bhubaneswar.
The incident took place on Friday afternoon when Mamun attacked his younger brother with a sword on the road in broad daylight.
The accused in the footage was seen walking on the road with the murder weapon after killing Pritam at an under-construction septic tank near Surekha Apartment.
Though the security guard of the apartment and other people witnessed the incident neither they informed police or dared to protest. Later, police rescued the victim lying in a pool of blood from the area and admitted him to the Capital Hospital where he was declared dead.
Notably, this is the 14th incident of murder in the last five months in the State capital. This has sent shockwaves among the residents and raised questions on the Commissionerate cops handling of the law and order situation.
