In a fresh revelation in the gruesome double murder and rape case of Dhamnagar in the district, which triggered a sensation in the State on Monday, the accused claimed “revenge” to be the motive behind the crime.
The accused identified as Gopinath Mohanty alias Babua in his statement before the media on Tuesday, said he killed Rabindra Behuria and his wife Bhaktilata as they were involved in physically torturing his parents for long. He also claimed of making several failed attempts earlier to eliminate the family which had raised him as a foster son.
“I grew up seeing Rabindra family torturing my parents from my childhood. It was since long that I was trying to eliminate the entire family of Rabindra. I also made three to four failed attempts to murder them in the past but succeeded finally on Sunday,” said the accused in his chilling revelation.
“As per my plan, I called Rabindra to consume liquor at a lonely place. After he got inebriated, I killed him by pushing into a nullah. Then I headed towards his home where I killed Bhaktilata. I also intended to kill his minor daughter but failed in my attempt as one of her neighbours reached the spot hearing her screams,” he added.
The accused claimed that he never wanted to escape but rather wanted to surrender to police. However, when asked my mediapersons that he committed the crime after Rabindra refused to give him Rs 2 lakh, he denied that he had asked the deceased for any money.
A team of Bhadrak police nabbed Babua near Chandrasekharpur Petrol Pump in Bhubaneswar on Monday night. later, acting upon the information revealed by him police managed to recover the body of Rabindra from a nullah near National Highway-26 in Dhamnagar area.
However, Babua’s nieghbours refuted his allegations that Rabindra’s family ever tortured the youth’s family.
Notably, Babua had battered Bhaktilata to death with a stone pestle in Talasitha village under the Dhamnagar police station on Saturday night. The accused had escaped from the spot after tying the hands and legs of the deceased’s daughter.
But before that, he had allegedly raped the girl. He had also looted gold and silver ornaments and money, which were seized from the Babua’s possession which was looted by him from Rabindra’s house.
