The Narasinghpur police arrested one Akula Naik of Malisahi village on Friday night on a complaint by Rebati Naik of the same village that she was assaulted by Akula.
The police allegedly beat Akula seriously in the custody to confess that he had assaulted the woman. As he was injured, the police rushed him to local hospital. But when his condition worsened, he was referred to the SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack.
Additional SP Nrusimha Charan Sahoo, the Athagarh SDPO, the IICs of the Badamba and Tigiria police stations and other police officers reached Narasinghpur to take stock of the situation. Police said that Akula was admitted to an ICU of SCB Hospital.
