An absconding under-trial prisoner allegedly murdered his grandmother at Gadeigiri village under the Balikuda police limits in Jagatsinghpur district on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Sakhilata Sahu. The accused Jeevan Jyoti Sahu was detained by police. Two other women also sustained injuries in his attack and were admitted to the SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack.
According to reports, Jeevan arrived at the house of the elderly woman in morning and hacked her with a knife. The old woman was grievously injured and died on the spot.
Police managed to nab the accused while he was trying to flee the scene.
Jeevan had in 2022 eloped with a girl of the area and later tortured her. The Balikuda police had arrested him in this connection. He was later lodged in the Jagatsinghpur Sub-Jail. However, he had later escaped from the prison and was absconding since then.
Though the reason behind the extreme act of Jeevan was yet to be ascertained, it was suspected that the motive of the attack was related to a love affair.
