Following the State Government’s notification that apart from Aadhaar card, any of the 19 other identity cards could be used by the migrant workers for their registration to return to the State, the Orissa High Court on Thursday disposed of a writ petition in this regard.
One Mahendra Kumar Parida had approached the High Court through a letter petition seeking judicial intervention stating that many migrant workers of the State, who are working in different parts of the country, do not possess Aadhaar cards and are finding it difficult to return home.
Converting the letter petition into public interest litigation (PIL) writ on May 12, a Division Bench headed by Chief Justice Mohammad Rafiq had asked the Government Advocate to take instructions from the authorities in this regard and adjourned the matter to Thursday.
On Thursday, when the Advocate General informed the court that in the meantime the State Government has issued a notification detailing that any of the 19 identity cards, including the voter’s photo identity card, could be used for registration, the court disposed of the PIL.
