As many as 8,000 youths have been waiting to get Government jobs on the compassionate ground, a scheme under which a member of a deceased Government employee’s family deserves a job, for five to 10 years now in the State. This figure came to the fore after the aggrieved youth, Sushant Kumar Nayak of Dhenkanal, a job seeker under the scheme, was arrested recently for threatening a woman Government staff at the Secretariat.
Frustrated Sushant had been making efforts to meet higher-ups of the Housing and Urban Development departments for pursuance. However, all his efforts went in vein, according to reports. The State Administration seems to have failed to execute the scheme as around 8,000 families are waiting for the benefit under the scheme.
In some cases, deserving youths have been waiting get appointments by authorities of various departments over eight to 10 years. The State Government had introduced the scheme under a special law in 1990. The objective of the scheme is to grant appointment to kin of a Government jobholder, who dies during service period, so that his family does not go through financial destitution.
However, there is no specific period of time is mentioned in the current law for which people are suffering.Earlier, the appointment was made on the basis of the Government directives. The beneficiaries were getting appointments for Class III and IV posts. However, the families of the deceased employees have been now waiting for the Government jobs for years after the restrictions were made on the appointments citing ‘financial crisis’ after 1995.While over 1,60,000 posts are now lying vacant in various departments of the State Government, authorities have been delaying the appointments on Compassionate Grounds in the name of restrictions imposed by the Finance Department.
