800 cattle rescued; 4 detained for smuggling

Police on Saturday rescued over 800 cattle and detained four persons for allegedly smuggling them on the Odisha-West Bengal border at Jaleswar in Baleswar district.

The district administration, locals claim, is turning a blind eye to the illicit activity as smuggling of cattle across the border through Jaleswar on NH 60 continues unabated.

On Saturday, five containers from the Laxmannath tollgate and three from Gopinathpur village were heading towards the Odisha-WB border with over 800 cattle when police intercepted them after a getting a tipoff.

While the vehicles were seized and the cattle rescued, police detained four persons in this connection. This route is often used to smuggle livestock. A case in this regard has been registered and an investigation initiated.

However, questions are being raised on the police efficiency as there are outposts at Haladipada, Rupsa, Basta and Jaleswar Rajghat but even then the eight containers managed to flout the security.
