Most of the households (80.7 per cent) of different slums in the city do not have a toilet at home and defecate in open, revealed a survey report published by the city-based NGO Youth for Social Development (YSD) with the help of the UNHABITAT here on Sunday.
The report card said that only four per cent have access to toilets in their house, eight per cent appear to have access to community toilets, while the remaining choose open defecation.
It also stated that six per cent households have water connection at home while 51 per cent have access to roads and 10 per cent of the households do not have electricity connection. Facilities of public toilet, garbage disposal along with storm water drainage needs urgent attention in all the slums, it added.
“Overall the slums project a bleak picture with regard to service delivery of various agencies like the Brahmapur Municipal Corporation (BMC), Transport and the PWD,” said the report card.
The report also suggested that the BMC should improve its service on emergency basis, particularly in the case of public toilets, drainage, and garbage cleaning. Bibhu Prasad Sahu of the YSD said, “On the whole, it appears that slum households are used as vote bank during elections rather than rehabilitating and developing them.”
