In the wake of enforcement of the amended Motor Vehicles Act in September, police have arrested 8,583 persons for drunken driving during special drives launched across the State.
Sources said that while 2,394 such drivers were arrested in September, 3,462 and 2,727 were nabbed for driving under the influence of alcohol in the month of October and November, respectively.
The highest 1,799 persons were arrested in Ganjam district while Puri recorded the lowest of 11 arrests.
In Bhubaneswar Urban Police District (UPD), 20 such drivers were arrested in the last three months while 147 were nabbed in Cuttack UPD.
