As many as 77 women snatchers were arrested from different places at the Grand Road in Puri during the Nabakalebar Rath Yatra and taken into the local jail.
As stated by the Puri Jail Superintendent and Jailor SK Prusty, while the capacity of the jail is 351 as per records, there were 541 inmates in the jail during the Rath Yatra, of which 77 were women snatchers hailing from West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
The women used to snatch chains, money purses and mobile phones in the crowds. They would be released soon after depositing cash security by their lawyers, said Prusty.
