70-yr-old lives under polythene shed, struggles for survival’

A poor, helpless elderly person has been residing under a polythene shed in Hemgiri block of Sundargarh district and struggling to survive. Years back, Bhagirathi Raksa (70) was living with his wife, three sons and four daughters at Kaudarah village under Ankelbira panchayat. But today he is all alone. While his wife, two sons and three daughters have died, his only son works as a driver and is not in touch with him. Similarly, Bhagirathi’s only daughter, after her marriage, has not come to meet her father once.

Bhagirathi had gone to Chhattisgarh to work as a labourer there; but after returning to his house in his village six years ago, he had found his house in completely damaged condition and his name was not found in the voter list of the panchayat.

Bhagirathi has been staying under a polythene shed, which was provided to him by the local Sarpanch.

In rainy season, he faces lots of difficulties, due to which he cannot stay under the polythene shed and roams in village and takes shelter at other places.

“I have no idea about the plight of this elderly person. I will immediately look into it and will try to ensure that he gets necessary assistance immediately,” said Hemgiri BDO-in-Charge SN Patel.
