The Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and other child security agencies on Saturday initiated prompt action after a video went viral in social media depicting a woman in her mid-fifties brutally thrashing her 7-year-old grandson in her house.

The shocking  incident occurred at Gangadharpur village under Basta block and the accused was identified as Brundabati Chand. In the video purportedly shot by a relative, the woman can be seen showering kicks and torturing her own grandson.

CWC Chairman Bhagrathi Barik informed, “Taking cognizance of the viral video, we initiated action soon

The child was rescued by local Childline members and both the victim and the accused were brought to Baleswar for interrogation. We would be handing over the accused to the Basta police after completion of our investigation.”  Barik added that report from the District Child Protection Officer on the matter has been also sought and the child would be kept in short stay home till his parents arrive.

According to sources, both the father and mother of the victim child are working as labourers in Mumbai. They had left the child at the custody of his grandmother , Chand, to look after him.

Although the exact reason as to why she was treating the minor harshly is yet to be known, it is believed that the child might have enraged her by doing some mischief.

Yet local sources said the accused  reportedly assaulted the minor when the latter refused to read and take milk.
