7 days on, police still to reach culprits

Even as seven days have elapsed since Seaways Shipping and logistic general manager Mahendra Swain was killed here, the Paradip police are yet to reach culprits.

Swain was shot dead near the Kendriya Vidyalaya at Madhuban on September 26 while he was going to his office from his residence.

Swain’s elder brother Rajkishor Swain has lodged an FIR naming Orissa Stevedores limited (OSl) MD Mahimananda Mishra, director Basanta Kumar Bala, Subhash Acharya and Deviprasad Tripathi and other two unknown persons as accused.

The Seaways Company also sent a copy of the FIR to Jagatsinghpur SP on the same day.

Though reasons behind the killing were yet to be ascertained, it is suspected that competition among stevedoring companies over cargo discharge and transportation tender was the reason behind the murder.

The activities of the Swain's vehicle driver and personal security officers are also under the scanner as they fled from the spot when the culprits threw petrol bottle bombs at Mahendra’s vehicle. And the driver didn’t call an ambulance and informed Seaways office after 45 minutes of the incident.

People now suspect that the police might not be able to nab the real culprits in this case as it was in earlier firing incidents and killings at Paradip.
