66-ft whale found dead at Chinchiri mouth

Published on:

Forest personnel on Friday recovered a 66-foot-long dead whale from the sea beach at the Chinchiri mouth under the Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary.

While the body had no injury marks, the forest personnel suspected that the whale might have died due to old-age.

Exact reason behind the death of the whale would be known only after autopsy conducted on it, said the officials. Whale is an endangered marine mammal as per the Wildlife Protection Act,1972, according to Rajnagar Forest Ranger Harekrushna Mallick.

It may be noted here that two dolphins had been found dead between Ekakula and Sathabhaya beach two days back. Post-mortem was conducted on the two. It was revealed that they were killed after being hit by hard objects like fishing trawlers.
