A poverty-stricken old man was shocked when he found that his name was not in the list of beneficiaries of the National Food Security Act and died of cardiac arrest here.

According to sources, Bishnu Charan Das (65) of Gopapatana village under Ostia panchayat of Rajnagar block had expected to avail subsidized food grains under the scheme, but he was shocked for not being included in the list.

Das was shouldering his family despite the old age following his eldest son was handicapped and his youngest son not able to make any income. So the family of Das mostly depended on BPl rice and the old age pension.

Though they belonged to the BPl family having a thatched house, but due to the faulty enumeration drive of the inquiry team, Das’s family was not enlisted in the NFSA.

later, he ran from pillar to post to urge the concerned block authority to enlist his name but in vain.

On Saturday morning, he died in cardiac arrest while sleeping at his house, said the villagers.

The locals alleged that due to faulty and callous survey made by the inquiry team, several genuine families were deprived of the benefit whereas most of the non eligible families figured in the list.
