In the light of the decision of the State Government to weed out the nonperforming Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), the Department of Skill Development and Technical Education (DoSDTE) has initiated action in this regard.

In the first instance, 62 ITIs have been identified for not conducting any admission or programme during the last two to three years, and these institutions would now face action.

The Directorate of Technical Education and Training (DTET) has written to the Director Training of the Directorate General of Training (DGT) to initiate de-affiliation procedure against these 62 privately-run ITIs in the state.

The Director Technical Education & Training has said in his letter to the Director Training of the Government of India that there are at least 40 private ITIs where no admissions have taken place during 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16.

The DTET has further said there 22 private ITIs where no admissions have taken place during the sessions 2014-15 and 2015-16.

These ITIs are established in Cuttack, Khordha, Puri, Ganjam, Baleswar, Dhenkanal, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Kalahandi, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Sambalpur, Bargarh and Sundargarh

There are 12 such ITIs in Cuttack district and 10 in Khordha district.

While reviewing the activities of the DoSDTE, Chief Secretary AP Padhi directed the officials to treat 2016 as the “Year of consolidation”. Keeping this in view, the department has initiated the action for consolidation. Along with action being initiated on the nonperforming ITIs, performing ITIs are recommended for Star Rating, which would help these institutions in the long run.

SDTE Principal Secretary lN Gupta revealed that the Grading Process of all the ITIs is progressing and would be completed in six months. Gupta held discussions with Director of Technical Education and Training (DTET) BP Sahoo and other senior officials to review the process here on Thursday.

This exercise is expected to result in competition among the ITIs for improvement in the education undertaken by these institutions. Grading would be awarded on the basis of availability of teachers, infrastructure and facilities for students, said officials, adding that grading is being done through inspection and crowd sourcing.

While there are 586 private ITIs in the State, 62 are facing action for nonperformance. There are 44 ITIs run by the Government which are being provided more teachers and facilities to improve the system, said sources. like ITIs, similar exercises would also be undertaken for the polytechnics in the State, said the sources.
