Voting for the prestigious Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) ended on Thursday evening without any major untoward incidents reported and the political fortunes of 350 candidates were sealed in EVMs.
Official sources said nearly 60 per cent voters of the 3.94 lakh electorate exercised their franchise. The same voting percentage had also been registered in the 2009 CMC polls. This time, some booths recorded more than 80 per cent polling. Counting of votes will start at the Bhubanananda School of Engineering on Friday morning and results are expected by late afternoon.
Minor law and order problems erupted in some areas like in Bidanasi and Mahanadi Vihar and the situations were immediately brought under control by the police. Trouble also erupted at Poporda, Jobra and Bidyadharpur. Sources said the tensions in many places were due to allegations of fake and bogus voting and canvassing by candidates and political leaders inside polling booths, and at many places previous rivalry was the cause of animosity.
