In order to make functional the Mahila and Sishu desks in 537 police stations, the State Government on Monday in principle created 537 posts of Sub-Inspectors (SIs).
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who had given the clearance for the creation of the posts, had asked the Director General of Police to immediately start the process of recruitment of the SIs through the Odisha Staff Selection Board.
The State Government had decided to set up a Mahila and Sishu desk in each police station to effectively contain and control atrocities on women, domestic violence and crime against children besides providing legal redressal to the victims.
According to official sources, to strengthen and make the Mahila and Sishu desks more functional, training programmes were undertaken to sensitise the officers and man powers attached to the desks.
Notably, the Mahila and Sishu desks have been set up in 537 police stations in the State and 1,191 police personnel have received training with the cooperation of the Women and Child Development (WCD) Department.
The WCD Department is also providing training support to the protection of officers, service providers and different NGOs working in the field of rehabilitation of women and children in distress.
The Mahila and Sishu desks would be headed by a police officer of SI rank with deployment of a women police ASI to deal with the cases of atrocities for their expeditious disposal.
