The autonomous status of the Rourkela Government Autonomous College has not been renewed for the last 11 years and the institution is now running with more than 50 per cent of sanctioned teacher posts, including Principal post, vacant.
Higher Education Minister Anant Das informed this in the State Assembly in response to a question of BJP MLA Dilip Ray recently. He said the college had got autonomous status in 2002 for five years till 2007. The status has not been renewed and talks are on with the University Grants Commission (UGC) regarding visit of NAAC team. After visit of NAAC team, the autonomous status would be renewed.
