Five Maoists, including a woman, surrendered before the Rourkela Police on Friday as they were disillusioned with the activities of the Red rebels, police said on Saturday.

The Maoists decided to return to the mainstream as they were disillusioned by the works of the rebels and were attracted to the benefits being offered by the Government, Rourkela Additional Superintendent of Police SK Mohanty said. The ultras finally surrendered after negotiations with police, he said.

The five were identified as Jeetan Bari (24), who carried a cash reward of Rs one lakh on his head, Chamu Munda alias Arjun (27), Kanhu Bora (24) Mangu Bandra (23) and Sukimati Gagarai alias Shilpa (22). They all had joined the Maoist ranks under pressure from a hardcore Red leader, Madhu Tarkot, they said, adding that of the five Maoists, only Kahnu belongs to K Balang of Odisha, a Maoist-influenced area while the rest four belong to Jharkhand.

Mohanty said 18 Maoists have surrendered before the Rourkela police so far this year and this was a big achievement.
