48-hr blockade hits coal transport in Talcher

Published on:

A 48-hour economic blockade launched by the Talcher Suraksha Manch here demanding fulfilment of a 12-point charter of demands disrupted coal mining and transportation in the area.

Due to the blockade, coal mining and transportation remained closed at all mines of the MCl. It also posed difficulties in transporting coal to NTPC and NAlCO by trains and trucks, sources said.

Members of the Manch were seen staging protest in front of the offices of NTPC and MCl.

The Manch’s demands included commencement of classes at the Talcher medical college from this year, rehabilitation of people affected by industrialisation, revival of the Talcher fertiliser plant and establishment of a special coal corridor. The economic blockade began from 5 in morning and would continue till 5 am on Tuesday.
