Four members of a family, including two minors, sustained critical burn injuries while trying to save their mother after she attempted self-immolation at Nuapada village under the Tarabha police station of Subarnapur district on Wednesday.

All four were rushed to the Bhima Bhoi Medical College Hospital in Balangir.

Sources said the woman’s husband Tiku Selma, who was also injured in the incident, had a quarrel with her after he returned to the home in an inebriated condition late on Tuesday night.

In the morning, when Tiku was outside, his wife Kaushalya tried to commit suicide by setting herself on fire after pouring kerosene on her body.

During the incident, the couple’s eight-year-old daughter and four-year-old son, who were also present inside the house received burn injuries.

Getting information, Tiku rushed to his house and tried to rescue his family members but also sustained burn injuries on his hands and legs. A team of firefighters later reached the spot, doused the flames and rescued them.
