Even four months after demonetisation, ATMs in Sambalpur are still remaining empty. When most of the people are depending on the SBI for monetary transaction, ATMs of SBI are also remaining empty for the most of the days.
On Friday, all the ATMs in the major locations inside Sambalpur town, including the Jilla School Chowk, the GM University Chowk, the lIC office, the Budharaja area and many other places, remained cashless for the whole day. All the customers and account holders had to return empty handed since no cash was there in the ATMs.
Situation in all other ATMs of the private banks is also the same. Private banks almost keep their ATMs empty and they give cash to their customers from the bank counters only. It has become almost a practice for them over the last four months.
When contacted, a senior officer from the regional office of SBI attributed it to availability of less cash from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). “All our efforts to get sufficient cash from the RBI have failed and ATMs many a time remain dry,” they admitted.
