4 held for killing youth over auto fare in Cuttack

Police on Sunday arrested four persons for allegedly killing a youth over a dispute relating to auto-rickshaw fare near the Arunodaya Market under the Badambadi police station on July 31.

The arrestees were identified as Nirakar Guru, Ganesh Nayak, Kishan Nayak and Shiba Prasad Sahu.

Police said the body of one Subhranshu Satpathy, a resident of Pattamundai in Kendrapada district, was found with multiple injuries near the market. Sapathy had come to Cuttack for treatment of his ailing mother

“The victim hired an auto-rickshaw from Satichoura to go to Arunodaya Market. But Satpathy had an argument with the auto-rickshaw driver Ganesh over the fare. Ganesh later called the other accused, who stoned the victim to death. They also looted cash of Rs 5,000 from the victim,” said a police official.

Locals alleged that the auto-rickshaw drivers near the Badambadi Bus-Stand-Madhupatna stretch charge exorbitant fares from the passengers, most of whom are from outside the city.

But if anybody dares to protest, one is abused and assaulted by their groups. Though the police know about their criminal antecedents they have remained mute spectators. This has emboldened them, they alleged.
