3 wild bears killed on Nilagiri road

Three wild bears, including two cubs and an adult female, were found dead near a roadside on the Ajodhya-Mitrapur road in Nilagiri forest area in Baleswar district on Sunday morning.

Soon, the incident was informed to the Nilagiri Forest Range office and officials recovered the animals’ carcasses and sent them to the block veterinary office for postmortem, said Forest Range officer Ayesha Akhtar.

Preliminary investigation suggested that these animals, the two cubs aged about two months and their mother of about eight to nine years’ age, might have walked down from the nearest forest; and while crossing the road, some heavy vehicles hit them killing them on the spot.

As the accident site happens to be a blind curve portion of the road, it was possible that in night or wee hours, the animals might not be visible to the vehicle driver, said the forest official
