The Commissionerate police have busted a fake currency note racket, members of which have duped many people by exchanging fake currency notes with real ones.

The police arrested three persons in this connection. They were identified as Pravat Sahoo of Bhadrak, Pradip Maiti of West Bengal and Rajendra Das of Jajpur who was residing in the Budheswari Colony here. The cops have seized Rs 7 lakh from their possession.

The three had approached Rohit Verma of Ranchi for exchanging their counterfeit currency notes. They lured Rohit with an offer of giving him Rs 10 lakh in exchange of Rs 5 lakh.

A few days back, Rohit arrived in Rajendra’s residence here and handed over Rs 5 lakh to the trio and received Rs 10 lakh from them. When Rohit later counted the cash he found many fake notes between the real notes.

He soon lodged a complaint at the Laxmi Sagar police station. Acting on his complaint promptly, the police arrested Rajendra and Pradip on that very day. Pravat was apprehended on Friday .

“The trio used to contact various persons for exchanging the fake currency notes with real ones. They also approached people for giving them gold bars at cheaper rates. We have seized such bars from their possession, which have been found to be fake,” said DCP Anup Kumar Sahoo.
