The Patkura police on Saturday detained three persons, including a woman, and the husband of the Sarpanch of Padmapur gram panchayat in a case involving suicide of a 22-year-old girl on Friday over her harassment by co-villagers at Mohammuda village in the district.

Jharana Swain, mother of the deceased girl, Shubhra Subhadarshini Swain, in her FIR had complained that her daughter had committed suicide because of constant harassment and abusive language used against her by a few fellow villagers over a past grudge.

Kendrapada SP Madkar Sandeep Sampat said, “We have been conducting an inquiry from several angles to ascertain the exact reason behind the suicide of the girl. While we have detained three persons in this connection, a few other accused have fled the village to avoid arrest. However, raids are on to nab them.”

Jharana in her FIR had accused eight persons of abetting suicide of her daughter, including Anusaya Behera, the sarpanch of Padmapur GP and her husband. Demanding the arrest of the accused, Jharana and her neighbours had staged dharana on Friday in front of Patkura police station main gate.
