2nd liver transplantation in State

Published on:

Governor Prof Ganeshi Lal on Tuesday congratulated Dr Manoj Kumar Sahu, Head, Gastroenterology and his team of the IMS and SUM Hospital here for a successful liver transplantation to save a precious life.

This was for the second time in the State’s medical history. The SUM Hospital successfully performed a living-donor liver transplantation with the help of Hyderabad-based Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG). The first-ever liver transplantation in the State had been undertaken in March 2020 at the same hospital.

The liver transplant was conducted on 49-year-old teacher Umesh Kumar Rout of Sambalpur, who received a portion of the liver of his sister Anita Kumari (41). A team headed by P Balachandran Menon of AIG and GI surgeon Satya Prakash Roychoudhury from SUM conducted the marathon 12-hour-long surgery.
