With the water level in its reservoir increasing due to rains in the upper catchment of the Mahanadi, the Hirakud Dam authorities released this season’s second flood water on Wednesday.
According to reports, the excess water of the reservoir is being released through two sluice gates. “We have opened two gates. After monitoring the inflow and outflow of the water, we will decide whether to open more gates or not,” said a dam official.
On August 5, the dam authorities had released this year’s first flood water through 10 sluice gates in a phased manner.
Though allaying fears of floods downstream, the Government has put the concerned district administrations on alert.
