The forest personnel of Bhitarkanika National Park will undertake enumeration drive of dolphins on February 12 at the Rajnagar Mangrove Forest Division, informed DFO Bimal Prasanna Acharya.
For the second consecutive year, the dolphin census drive will be held at Bhitarkanika. Notably, last year the park authority had organised the dolphin census drive for the first time. The survey will be conducted from Dhamara to Devi river mouth on State coast, stated Acharya.
The census would also help to provide basic information about migrating behaviour of Irrawaddy dolphins as well as other species.
According to Acharya, last year at least six species of cetaceans from the diverse wetland habitat namely Irrawaddy dolphin, Bottlenose, Humpback (Sousa chinensis), Pan tropical spotted and Finless Porpoises were spotted.
