290 colleges lack basic infra

During its inspection on the infrastructure in 317 self-financing colleges in the State, the Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) has found that 60 of them are running in rented houses while as many as 290 even lack elementary infrastructure to impart quality education to the students.

In its report to the Higher Education Department, the council has said some colleges have no proper library and laboratory facilities and have no more than two rooms for their students to study.

Though the Higher Education Department allowed opening of some of these colleges five years ago, they have not put in place their own infrastructure till date. Due to this, the students of these colleges are deprived of practical classes, the report said.

While most of these colleges have less than 20 students, the concerned authorities have failed to impart quality education to them though they collect hefty fees from the students, it added.

According to CHSE Chairman Prof Basudev Chhatoi, the report on the state of infrastructure in these colleges, finalised by a committee of the council, would be uploaded on the CHSE website www.chseodisha.nic.in on Wednesday for public appraisal. The college authorities would be allowed to have their opinion regarding any complaints on the report within 10 days, after which council would hand over the report to the Higher Education Department.
