A survey for a proposed ring road for Baleswar town would be held on Saturday. The decision was taken on Wednesday at a meeting which was attended by MP RK Jena, district Collector Pramod Das and officials of the line departments.
The proposed project was taken up by the State Government after sustained persuasion by MP Jena which received budgetary allocation in the current fiscal year.
The proposed road of 29 km length would mitigate several problems, which is likely to be compounded in the coming years. With growing population and no space left for construction of roads, the Baleswar MP had apprised the Chief Minister about the need of a ring road around the city.
The Works Department has included the project in the State plan of 2016-17 under new plan schemes and a budgetary provision has been made.
“While the project appeared once a pipe dream, it will become a reality now. Budgetary provision has been made this fiscal and it would be done after a detail project report is made,” said Jena.
As the town is age-old and the roads are very compressed, controlling vehicle movement has become a daunting task. This has given rise to accidents and severe traffic congestion during peak hours.
With town growing fast with various new institutions and establishments, the road infrastructure is almost same for last 30 years. Railway lines within the town area cause unnecessary delays in movement of vehicles. The situation could become worse after more and more people from different places would commute through the town after establishment of an AIIMS satellite centre and a Government medical college and hospital.
The proposed ring road would be on outskirts of town between Nuniajodi and Chandipur along with the bank of river Budhabalanga. One end of the ring road would touch the NH, while another end with the defence road.
