As many as 28 cabins and shops constructed illegally on Government lands in and around the MKCG Medical College Hospital campus were demolished amid protests by shop owners on Monday.

The district administration took the initiative in response to the Medical Council of India’s recent directive the MKCG Medical authorities to make the campus and surroundings free of encroachments.

About eight wooden cabins from the sides of the Road running to Bhabanipur and about 20 shops and cabins near the Radio Diagnosis Department were demolished with help of machines in the presence of district Collector Premchandra Choudhury, Brahmapur Sub-Collector laxmikant Sethy, MKCG Superintendent Dr Ashok Kumar Behera, BMC Commissioner Sushant Kumar Sethi and SDPO Sanatan Kumar Dash. Adequate police forces were deployed.

The Bhavanipur road was closed during the eviction drive as shopkeepers opposed the move. Even the police detained about 20 persons who opposed the drive.

Notably, the road is used by people belonging to about 25 villages to come the medical and to the town.

“All the illegally constructed constructions will be evicted to create parking places for the medical,” said medical Superintendent Dr Behera.

On Tuesday, villagers too blocked the road by putting buruning tyres in protest against the eviction.
