272 civilians die in Maoist violence in 25 years in Odisha

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday informed the Assembly that a total of 272 civilians reportedly lost lives in Maoist violence in the State during the period from 1990 till December 8, 2015 and families 235 of them have been provided with ex-gratia assistance as per the ex-gratia scheme as modified and revised from time to time.

The CM said this in response to a question by MlA Manas Madkami.

Pataik informed that assistance has not been provided to 28 families due to want of the required documents from the beneficiaries. In the remaining nine cases, the subsequent enquiry/investigation revealed that these deaths were not due to Maoist violence and hence assistances have not been given.

Similarly, the CM informed that a total of 895 persons of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nuapada and Keonjhar districts have reportedly left their villagers due to Maoist activities and out of them 385 persons of Koraput district have returned home.

The Government has taken a series of steps both on security and developmental fronts in the Maoist-affected areas, he said.
