The Balugaon Forest Division officials on Thursday seized 25 dead migratory birds and arrested two poachers.
Acting on a tip-off, the Balugaon Forest officials raided Majhiara area in Nalabana in the lake and arrested the poachers. The officials seized the dead birds from them.
The Government has notably banned entry into 15.53 sqkm area of the Nalabana bird sanctuary these days.
“Since the meat of migratory birds is in high demand in nearby towns of Chilika, poachers hunt them for an earning,” said Balugaon ranger Ramachandra Sethi, adding that the arrested poachers were forwarded to court. The Nalabana island is known as a paradise of migratory birds where lakhs of winged guests descend during their annual sojourn every winter. Besides Nalabana, migratory birds also gather at other parts of the 1,100 sq km lake.
