24-hr bandh hits life in Puri dist

Published on:

Demanding houses for the victims of cyclone Phailin, the Puri district Phailin Action Committee resorted to a 24-hour bandh in Brahmagiri and Kurshnaprasad blocks in the district on Monday.

The agitators blocked the road from Puri to Prayagi by burning tyres at various squares. They also blocked the Puri-Satapada NH-316 at various places disrupting vehicular movements. Besides, shops and other business establishments remained closed at the places affecting normal life.

The committee members alleged that the Phailin-affected people  have not received any compensation yet. The Government had assured to provide housing at `3.50 lakh with help of the World Bank to affected people residing within five km from the coast. “While the affected people of Khordha and Ganjam districts have already been given such houses, the programme has not been implemented in Puri district,” alleged a member of the committee.

The committee had earlier staged agitation, road blockade and a Garjan Samavesh over the issue, but in vain, he said, adding that the local MlAs are responsible for the affected people’s plight. As the Government did not pay heed to the genuine demand, the committee resorted to the bandh on Sunday, he added.
