Over 210 people die every month in road mishap in the State,” said experts quoting a report on the occasion of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims observed by the Sankha Dhwani Rasta Suraksha Samiti (SDRSS) here on Sunday.
Samiti secretary Prakash Mohapatra said the day is observed every year on the third Sunday of November to remember the plights of road accident victims. Now, time has come to think about the safety of people, especially vulnerable groups like children, senior citizens and pedestrians, on roads, he said.
Mohapatra said that nearly eight to ten people die on roads daily and around 2,500 people die per year in the State due to just ignorance of road discipline. Parents who need to be sensitised can play a major role for safety of their wards in this regards, he said.
“The police and the State Government need to change their attitudes and look into the issue very deeply,” said Mohapatra, adding, “While issuing driving licences, the authorities should give proper attention towards the new drivers’ knowledge and skill.” He also said the State Government should sensitise people, especially youth mass, by engaging social organisations working in this sector.
