Many abandoned and orphan children who were once rescued from street sides or garbage pits are now playing in the laps of their new parents who have adopted them. Some of the parents are from foreign countries as well.

The DISHA-SAA centre situated in Asiyana Colony, Bisra in Sundargarh district had rescued them. The organisation is authorised to run a SAA (Special Adoption Agencies) under CARA (Central Adoption Resource Authority.

According to the District Child Protection Office (DCPO), Sundargarh, between 2017 and 2022, 165 abandoned or orphan babies have been handed over to DISHA for the care, protection and well-being of every child. Out of them, 153 babies have already been adopted by couples.

In reply to a question whether the adoptive parent would be taking proper care of the baby or misusing it, DISHA secretary AK Azad said there is proper guideline framed by the CARA which is scrutinized thoroughly before handing over a baby. Finally, after the order of the court, the baby is handed over to the adoptive parents.

Regarding the foreign parents, Azad said any Non-Resident Indian, overseas citizen of India or foreign prospective adoptive parents, living in a country which is a signatory to the Hague Adoption Convention and wishing to adopt an Indian child, can approach the authorized foreign adoption agency or the Central authority concerned, for adoption and after proper verification the final decision for allowing the adoption is made.
