Varsity teachers demand retirement at 65

The Federation of Odisha University Teachers’ Associations (FOUTA), a body of teaching members of 12 universities in the State, held a rally from Mater Canteen Square to lower PMG here on Thursday demanding enhancement of the superannuation age of university teachers from 60 years to 65 as per the recommendation of the UGC in 2006.

Several memorandums have been submitted to the Chief Minister and the Higher Education and the Finance Ministers in last several years, but it has yielded no result, said FOUTA convener Professor Bibudha Parasar.

Though the neighbouring States like Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and other States have already enhanced the superannuation age of university teachers to 65 years as per the UGC recommendation, the Odisha Government has not yet taken steps for it, rued Parasar.

The teachers’ representatives urged the State Government to make a decision in favour of their demand, which is quite a genuine one on the part of the teachers. Among others, Prof Santosh Kumar Tripathy, Prof Bulu Moharana, Prof Rama Chandra Majhi, Dr Gokul Bihari Dash and Dr Sarba Narayan Mishra were present.
