Farmers’ suicide continued unabated in Odisha with another peasant allegedly ending his life by consuming poison on Thursdaynight due to loan burden.
The deceased was Paramananda Palei (55) of Gurudhi village under the Purunakote police limits in Angul district.
According to reports, Palei had taken a loan of around `2.5 lakh for the purpose of sharecropping. He was under stress to repay the loan, for which he took the extreme step after losing mental balance, his family members said.
Angul ADM Srinibas Behera said, “The local BDO and Tehsildar have been asked to probe into the allegation (of Palei’s suicide). Everything will be clear after submission of the probe report.”
The BJP demanded that the district administration pay a compensation of `10 lakh to Palei’s family at the earliest, failing which there would be an agitation on the issue.
