Int’l swimming medalist gets rousing welcome

Bhubaneswar: “It gave me awesome feeling when I got selected in the Indian team. For the first time I was participated in the meet under the banner of the Tricolour it was a matter of great pride for me,” said Odia swimmer Pratyasa Ray on her arrival here on Monday after winning four gold and a silver medals in the South Asian Aquatic Meet, which held at Sri lanka from October 18 to 23. When I entered the pool side, I felt lot of pressure and excitement as it was my first international meet. But thanks to the crowds of the stadium as I could hear “Go India Go” the only wards that motivated me a lot and got my first International silver medal in Under-15 girls 50 metre backstroke event. Many believes international coaches will make sea changes, But I strongly believe that our players are equally strong like overseas players. We use to put maximum effort in the ground, but need t not have the technical support only. That made all difference between India and USA swimmers. Before leaving for the international meet, The Indian national camp held at Bilward Stadium from October 7 to 16. My timing at the camp and I maintained the same and bagged four gold medals in South Asian Meet. I am running short of time now, only one month is with me as I will take part in the National School Games to be held in the month of November. My first and foremost target is to get medals in the meet to ensure my place for the World School Championship schedule to be held in 2017, added Pratyasa. Pratyasa opened her international career by winning a silver medal in the U-15 girls 50 metre backstroke event with a timing of 32.82 seconds in the inaugural day of the six-day South Asian Aquatic Championships, which concluded at Sugathadasa Indoor Swimming Pool Colombo, Sri lanka from October 23. She bagged gold medals in the Under-15 girls 100, 200 metre backstroke events by clocking 1:10;91and 2:33.29 respectively. She also claimed double gold in the 4X100 medlay and 4X100 mix-medlay events with a timing of 4:43.78 and 4:34.40 respectively.
