NHRC asks OHRC for probe, action

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) to take action on the allegations of students of two premier English medium schools being forced to read in dilapidated buildings in Angul district.

The direction of the apex human rights watchdog came after Angul-based Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain filed a petition alleging that nearly 2,223 students of Delhi Public School, Nalconagar and DAV Public School, Talcher in Angul district are imparting studies in dilapidated school buildings.

"The school buildings are around 55years-old. The schools have no proper infrastructures and lacks adequate teachers," the petitioner contended. She had urged the NHRC for emergent action against the responsible authorities for depriving students of quality education.

"It also amounts violation of right to education and also raises questions on the safety and security of the students," the petitioner maintained.
