The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Bhadrak Collector to appear before it in New Delhi on April 14 in a case relating to the starvation death of a family comprising a young man and his parents.

Social activist Radhakanta Tripathy alleged before the NHRC about the failure of Government in ensuring social welfare schemes to the family that resulted in starvation death of Sreedhar Mishra son of Rangahar Mishra on February, 21, 2013 in Jagannathprasad village under Balipokhari gram panchayat in Bhandaripokhari block in Bhadrak district. “The negligence of Government officials has thrown the lives of entire BPl family into hell. After the death of Sreedhar, his parents also died of starvation,” Tripathy contended. Though the NHRC ordered the Collector to provide all possible support to the family but same was not complied.

“Despite sufficient time, show cause notice and opportunity having been given, the requisite report has not been received. In these circumstances, let non-conditional summons be issued for the personal appearance of Bhadrak District Collector before the commission on April 14, 2015 at 11 am along with the requisite report and his explanation for delay in submission of the report,” the NHRC ordered. Meanwhile, the Collector has written an apology letter to the NHRC and sought exemption from personal appearance.
