Champions Trophy: FIH team visits Kalinga Stadium

Bhubaneswar: International Hockey Federation (FIH)’s four member team visited Kalinga Stadium here on Wednesday, as the capital city of the State will host the 35th edition of the Champions Trophy Men's Hockey Tournament from December 13 to 21. The connectivity from the airport to the venue and the hotels are better. The infrastructure here is like an international stadium but need few restructuring. Otherwise we are extremely satisfied with the available facilities, said Event Coordinator of FIH Jasmine Bay. “The eight-team elite International Hockey Federation (FIH) event will be held at Kalinga Stadium here. We are extremely satisfied the way the Odisha Government is supporting us. The stadium will have two astroturfs, one is ready and the work on the other is going on. The Odisha Government has assured us that the entire construction work will be completed before the schedule. We visited few hotels in the city," Bay said. Being medium sized stadium and the growing popularity of the game in Odisha, the Champions Trophy is expected to draw huge crowds to the ground unlike previous events. The disciplined crowd of the city shown a good temperament at the time of Hockey India league (HIl) here, we expect this time they will cheer for the home team as well as for the overseas teams, said Broadcast Manager of Hockey India Rupert Rumney. The FIH also gave thumbs up to Bhubaneswar when a delegation of the world body visited the Kalinga stadium last year and were impressed with the facilities. “Hockey India will host the event in collaboration with Hockey Odisha and the State Government. We are putting all our effort to make the tournament grand success. This will be the first international hockey match that Odisha people will enjoy. We hold the HIl comfortable by the support of Government and the public,” said Sports and Youth Services secretary Saswat Mishra. As per the requirement of the FIH we will make some changes in regard to dressing room and press zone before August. The second Astroturf would be completed before August 31, added Mishra. “India (host nation), Australia (defending champions), Netherlands, Pakistan, Belgium, Argentina, England and Germany are the eight teams would fight for the top honour. By hosting the tournament here, Bhubaneswar becomes an international venue for hockey. I am hopeful that in future we would get the opportunity to organize many international matches,” said Hockey Odisha secretary Pratap Satapathy. Hockey India (HI)CEO Elena Norman and HI Joint Director BN Bhusan were also present.Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s nine powerlifters left from here on Wednesday to participate in the East Zone Powerlifting and Benchpress Championship at Patna in Bihar from July 18 to 25.
