About 200 prisoners of the State, who have completed 14 years in jail, are likely to be freed soon. The State Sentence Review Board, which is scheduled to meet on November 10, is likely to decide eligible prisoners’ premature release in pursuance to a Supreme Court order. The board had met in 2014 for the last time when some prisoners were set free. “As per the order of Supreme Court, the State Sentence Review Board considers eligible cases for premature release. Due to a stay by the apex court, the board had not met since 2014. Now the Government has decided to convene a board meeting on November 10. About 200 cases will be tabled at the for consideration of premature release,” Additional IG of Prisons Manoranjan Patnaik told reporters. He said those who are lifers, convicts of life imprisonment, already served above 14 years of rigorous imprisonment without any remission but have exhibited good conduct and activities in the jail are being recommended for premature release.
