Brazen consumption of alcohol at public places has become a nuisance in the capital city Bhubaneswar. Most of the time the offenders go unpunished due to the indifferent attitude of police though consuming alcohol in public space is illegal.
However, in view of forthcoming municipal elections, the Commissionerate police carried out a drive against those who drink in public places, especially near eateries, dhabas and outside liquor outlets. The drive was conducted in different parts of Bhubaneswar in the past 48 hours
Around 200 people were fined Rs 500 each for drinking alcohol at public places.
Besides, police have also decided to act tough against the unruly youths who congregate in large numbers at public places.
As per initial reports, fines were slapped on 92 persons while temporary hag-outs called ‘Khattis’ at 12 places were demolished by police teams at different locations in the city.
Police have appealed to people not to congregate unnecessarily till the model code of conduct is in force. “There is no restriction near eateries. But we are targeting the places which have been identified as spots where criminals and other antisocial elements assemble,” a senior police official said.
But some city residents said the drive should continue on a regular basis as public drinking and Khattis often lead to law and order situations; and not only women and girls, citizens in general also feel unsafe.
